Job Overview:

This position resides in the Alcohol Beverage Control Division of the Department of Revenue. Duties include managing inquiries and appeals, conducting informal resolutions, negotiating settlement agreements for compliance cases, and educating licensees about alcoholic beverage regulations. Job Overview:

This position resides in the Cannabis Control Division of the Department of Revenue. The Cannabis Lab Specialist performs a variety of duties assigned by management. This position assists in overseeing projects related to quality assurance and laboratory system improvement functions with current and potential marijuana laboratories in Montana within the Marijuana Laboratory Program. The Information Management Bureau ensures secure handling and processing of taxpayer information, payments, and data.  The bureau is organized into three units including Customer & Payment Management, Digitization, and Information Governance. Tax Examiner 1 – 24140200 - Business & Income Tax Division - Helena

The Montana Department of Revenue administers almost 40 state taxes, property appraisals, liquor laws, and unclaimed property for the state of Montana. The Business and Income Taxes Division (BIT) manages a variety of Montana tax types that include business, individual, and natural resources. BIT is comprised of two bureaus (Income and Withholding Taxes and Business Taxes and Valuation), that perform audits, verify compliance with Montana laws for all taxes administered by the division, and issues appraisals and assessments of centrally assessed property.

Job Overview:

This position resides in the Business & Income Taxes Division of the Department of Revenue. The Business and Income Tax Division ensures secure handling and processing of taxpayer information and data. Duties include conducting technical level examinations on assigned tax returns that involve research, verifying data, adjusting returns, providing communications to taxpayers and their representatives, and participating in the appeal process. Tax examiner I’s assist with development of audit programs and procedures, draft summary reports of audit findings, and testify as an expert witness. They also assist other tax examiners in their responsibilities and provide a range of support services to taxpayers and other department programs and employees. The position does not supervise other staff.

Education and Experience

The above competencies are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, business administration, or public administration supplemented by college coursework in accounting or closely related field.
  • One year of job-related work experience in auditing, tax examination, or accounting practices.

Other combinations of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis.
