Job Overview:
This position resides in the Business and Income Tax Division of the Department of Revenue. This position appraises centrally assessed property, including real and personal property, to determine its fair market value. The position does not supervise other staff.
Competencies
This position requires:
- Ability to effectively communicate with peers, managers, and taxpayers both verbally and through written communications and reports.
- Technical knowledge of appraisal and assessment methods, procedures, and standards. After hire, appraisers must successfully complete the following coursework:
- the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) Courses I and II or their equivalents;
- the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) Courses BV201N, BV202N, and BV203N1 or their equivalents;
- the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practices course; and
- the Western States Association of Tax Administrators, Committee on Centrally Assessed Properties (WSATA-CCAP) Courses 101, 102, and 103 or their equivalents.
- Ability to apply ethics, appraisal standards, and other best practices to appraisal work.
- Ability to independently manage workload and meet productivity goals and deadlines.
- Strong critical thinking skills to analyze information and make logical and well-thought-out decisions.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to maintain skills and knowledge as appraisal principles and federal and state laws change and evolve.
- Knowledge of tax accounting; financial analysis; and investigative methods.
- Ability to properly handle and maintain confidential information.

Education and Experience
The above competencies are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:
- The employee must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in business, accounting, finance, economics, public administration or a related field. If the employee does not have a bachelor’s degree, they must have at least five years of experience in the business or centrally assessed property valuation field.
- Four years of job-related experience
- Preferred work experience includes property appraisal, business valuation, financial services, auditing, or experience in a related field.
- The successful applicant will be required to obtain Montana certification in centrally assessed property appraisal as soon as possible based on available funding and training opportunities.
Other combinations of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis.
