All individual taxpayers, except farmers and ranchers, must pre-pay their 2018 individual income tax through a mix of employer withholding and estimated tax payments if they had any tax liability for 2017.
In general, taxpayers receiving income from a source other than wages, must use the Individual Estimated Income Tax Worksheet to determine if estimated tax payments are needed and to calculate their quarterly payments.
The Montana Individual Estimated Income Tax Worksheet (Form ESW) for the 2018 tax year can be found on My Revenue.
The pre-payment must equal either:
- 100% of the preceding tax year (safe harbor) if the individual filed a Montana individual income tax return for a period of 12 months, or
- 90% of the tax for 2018 tax year.
If your income decreases in 2018 for reasons unforeseen, or your activity is seasonal in nature, you may want to use the Estimated Tax Annualization Worksheet (Form ESA), which allows you to adjust your quarterly payments accordingly.
Estates and trusts use the Montana Fiduciary Estimated Income Tax Worksheet (Form ESW-FID) and the Fiduciary Estimated Tax Annualization Worksheet (Form ESA-FID).
